Unit 1: Brochure
Create a brochure about real-world technical writing. Think about what we have learned and worked on and turn that into information for someone who does not know much about real-world writing. Draw on your expertise to inform others on how to successfully write an email, resume, cover letter, etc. Make it helpful, interesting, and physically appealing in order to entertain your reader.
Unit 2: Memoir Portfolio
You must have 4 pieces total of varying lengths. These pieces should be final draft quality: written neatly in blue or black ink, or typed. They should reflect effort and revision.
3 Required Pieces:
- My Name
- Personal Credo
- Personal Narrative Essay
- Where I’m From Poem
- Photo Writing
- College Admissions Essay
- Original Art with writing component
- Choice: ___________________________________________________
COVER:
Your cover should be representative of you and your stories. It must include a six word memoir. Be creative with your cover. Try different techniques. Maybe you want to make a fabric cover and decorate or you may want your cover to be a collage of the things that are important to you. The choices are endless. Be creative and have fun!!!!
ORGANIZATION:
Please bind your pieces in some way. Try different techniques. Maybe you want to bind it like a book, create a newspaper, or just put them in a folder. If you prefer an online portfolio and you have computer access, you may use your blog.
Unit 3: Refugees PBL
(Note: This now must be done alone.)
- Component #1: Company Website
- Use wix.com (directions will be provided).
- Your website must thoroughly represent your non-profit company. Consider the information companies provide on their website. Mimic that.
- Must include your name, mission, an overview, appropriate images, and contact information.
- You will upload all the additional components onto this website (video, donation letter, print ad).
- You will email me a link to your site by: ______________________________________.
- Component #2: Video (Commercial/PSA)
- Must contain all three appeals – ethos, pathos, logos, and persuasive techniques
- Must be a minimum of 1 minute long
- You can use Windows Movie Maker, iMovie, or any video making format to make your video
- Your group members must all participate.
- Video should be submitted to Youtube and uploaded to the wix.com website.
- Component #3 – Mailing (Donation Letter)
- Must contain all three appeals – ethos, pathos, logos, and persuasive techniques
- Must be in a business letter format (1 page typed, single spaced, free of grammatical errors)
- Letter must introduce your organization, explain your cause, and explain how the donations will be used toward your cause
- Must contain all contact information and logo
- Must look authentic
- Must be uploaded to the wix.com website.
- Component #4– Print Ad (Magazine Advertisement)
- Must contain all three appeals – ethos, pathos, logos, and persuasive techniques
- Must be in color, neat, visually appealing, and free of grammatical errors
- Microsoft Publisher is a great tool for this, but feel free to use any application.
- Must contain all contact information and logo
- Must look authentic
- Must be uploaded to the wix.com website.
Unit 4: Persepolis Writing
OPTION 1: In this project you will be taking a deeper look into the life of Marjane in the graphic novel Persepolis. After reading the novel you will write journal entries from Marjane’s point of view (POV). The way you wish to do this is entirely up to you, but there are a few expectations you MUST meet in order to receive full credit:
Expectations:
- A minimum of 10 entries is required (you may do more than 10 if you would like).
- Minimum of 300 words for each journal entry.
- You may work with one other person if you would like (this means you will need 20 entries in your journal).
- You will complete a rough draft for all of the journal entries and turn those in as well.
- The final project that you will turn in should include the final drafts of the journal entries in order.
- Be sure to write in first-person POV and consider your character’s voice.
- Get creative, you may color, draw, decorate (etc.) your journal, and pictures from the text are also encouraged!
- Be sure to give your journal a title.
Expectations:
- A minimum of 50 panels is required.
- You must utilize all aspects of the graphic novel format – the layout, the text, the graphics, etc.
- You must have a new and imaginative ending to Marjane’s story – do not just take what already exists and rework it.
- You will complete a rough draft for your panels and turn that in as well.
- Your final draft must be inked and colored; or done on the computer and include color.
- The final project that you will turn in must include a cover page with a title that reflects your story and a visual.
- Be sure to write in first-person POV and consider your character’s voice.
Expectations:
- You must write at least two pages/750 words PER CHAPTER.
- You must complete rough drafts and turn those in as well.
- Use dialogue where necessary (as taken from the graphic novel chapters).
- Write about the actions and emotions by inferring from the graphics.
- Expand upon ideas presented in the chapter using figurative language, symbolism, and proper grammar/spelling.
- Make sure that you include different perspectives and points of view as they are presented in the graphic novel.
- Your final draft should be typed in Times New Roman, 12 point, or handwritten neatly in ink.
