Good morning! Today we are returning to our discussion of culture and cultural rituals, customs, and traditions. You'll have some time to finish "Body Ritual Among the Nacirema" from yesterday (and turn in your handout plus annotated article for a grade!). Then, we'll be introducing your Unit 1 Project, which I think you should enjoy. Stay tuned for an entire blog post about the project!
Today we are really kicking off Unit 1 with a focus on culture. The notes for today are attached - there are some vocab terms in the PowerPoint, so make sure you get those if you are out of class. We'll be watching some video clips of unusual culture customs, and then reading an informational text, "Body Ritual Among the Nacirema," to learn about a highly unusual culture! The reading activity that goes along with this will be graded. We'll also spend some time setting up your notebooks and getting organized, so make sure you have your binder and tabs ready to go.
Today we are taking the Common Assessment. Please remember that on this first baseline test, we score the entire test as well as the performance task; they will be entered into Synergy as a weight of 5%, but the multiple choice will not count against you. It is important that you do your best so that we know what you have already mastered and what you will need extra help on. If you have any questions, please let me know. BONUS POINT OPPORTUNITY!! Answer the 2 questions below AND send me a follow up email at amyeganegi(at)gmail.com to let me know you submitted your responses. This will earn you +5 on your performance task. Good morning! Today we are going to be in the computer lab setting up personal blogs. Download the directions below, and make sure you keep an eye on what you're supposed to be doing. We will go over the Unit 1 Blog Assignments together, but a copy is also below if you need it (blue copy given in class).
Today, we're starting by reviewing symbolism and color symbolism from yesterday. Then, after an introduction to mandalas, you will create your personal mandala, using symbolism to visually represent your identity. Have fun! They are due on Monday!
Notes and activity instructions for today are attached! Here are some answers to your Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) left on exit slips the last two days.... 1) Are we going to read books as a class? Yes. 2) How often do we have to put stickers on the cabinet? This is something we'll do as an exit slip several times a week. 3) Do we have to read books every month? Each unit is about a month long, and we have one major reading per unit. 4) Are tests multiple choice or written response? Common assessments are a combination of both. 5) If we're not taking the EOCT, what are we taking? Common assessments. 6) What average is a passing grade? 70 or above. 7) Can you please not make me work with anyone? Sometimes, you'll have to work in groups. Learning to collaborate with others is a life skill! 8) Can I use a dictionary? Of course! 9) Will we watch movies often? I like to incorporate video clips as often as I can, and we will be watching a couple of documentaries here and there. 10) Is there a heavy homework load? Generally, I don't assign nightly homework. It is your responsibility to complete in-class assignments that are not finished but need to be turned in. Your major ongoing homework will be the unit projects and your personal blog. 11) Will we do a lot of projects? Yes. One per unit, as well as your ongoing personal blog. 12) Do we really need a 3-ring binder? Yes. It will help improve your organizational skills! 13) Will we do a lot of group activities?/Why can't I pick my own group? I would say yes, they are fairly frequent. Sometimes you will get to choose, but for some activities I may assign you a group for various reasons. 14) Will we have to present a lot? Yep! 15) Can we get extra credit when we fall off the wagon? I will give you extra credit opportunities throughout the semester. It's up to you to do them when you get them. If, at the end of the semester, you haven't completed extra credit, or your regular assignments for that matter, there will be nothing additional for you to do. 16) Will we write poetry? We will try! 17) Is this class just like 9th Lit? Not at all. 18) How difficult will this class be? It will be difficult in that it is new material, somewhat rigorous, and requires you to think. However, if you follow the advice I have given you and stay on top of your game all semester, you will do great! 19) Are we learning about every country? We will learn about a lot of countries and cultures - but maybe not every one. 20) What's your favorite color? Green or turquoise. 21) Have you ever been to Iran? Yes! 22) What high school and college did you attend? North Cobb HS, UGA, and Georgia State. 23) Are we going to have free days? No way! We have so much awesome stuff to learn. 24) Why can't I eat/Can I snack? We can't eat in class. Please get a snack between classes and make sure your trash goes in the trash can. 25) Summer Reading Questions..... Please see me/email me with individual questions about summer reading.
Today in class we'll be reviewing the classroom rules, expectations, and procedures, as well as learning about what it takes to succeed in World Lit. Through discussion, advice from last year's students, and your own thoughts, you'll work in a group to create a "How to Succeed" guide. You'll also have the chance to complete a survey that shows your learning style; this information will be used to help me plan activities to interest you throughout the semester. PLEASE DON'T FORGET.... - 1) Introduction Letters are due today - 2) Summer Reading is due this week - 3) Obtain your supplies this week
Welcome back! I hope you had an amazing summer! I am very excited to be teaching you in World Lit this semester. This blog will be extremely important in your success in this class. Each day, you can find the notes, assignments, activities, handouts, reminders, and whatever else you may have missed (if you were absent) or just that you need to review. So, for example.... Today in class you will read and write a letter of introduction, we'll do a couple of fun icebreakers to learn names and get to know each other, and we will review the class rules, procedures, and expectations. Please make sure you 1) finish your letter (which is due Tuesday and is a grade), 2) finish and turn in your summer reading, and 3) obtain the supplies you will need. Notes & Handouts:
