Today we are continuing our look at the theme "teen angst" and beginning an argumentative essay on the topic. It is really important for you to learn how to write a strong persuasive essay, so that you can do well on the graduation writing test next year!! Your final essay is due by Wednesday, March 18 (typed in 12 pt Times New Roman OR neatly handwritten).
Today we are kicking off Unit 3: Teen Angst - The Struggle is Real! We started off with an opinionnaire and a very interesting debate in all classes about teenager problems and related issues. This took so long that we didn't get through everything, but you did learn what teen angst actually means and ranked the top three problems or causes of teen angst. Tomorrow we will pick off where we left off. Notes and handouts below.
Today we are taking the Unit 2 Common Assessment! If you are absent, you will need to schedule a time to make this up. Good luck!
1st block - We discussed stereotypes and single stories, then watched two episodes of the ABC News show "What Would You Do?" After some reflective writing and dicsussion on that, we worked on a persuasive claim and paragraph related to the issue of discrimination. *Please see last week's post for the PPT and notes on this lesson.*
2nd and 4th block - After completing a notebook review, you get some Amnesty Time to catch up on missing work, do some enrichment work for extra credit, or work on your project REMINDER: PART 2 OF YOUR PROJECT IS DUE FRIDAY!!! ALSO YOU NEED THE BOOK BY MONDAY!
Monday: OPTIC Warm-up, then to the media center for guidance lessons, then a short vocab quiz. Tuesday: Journal Warm-up, then we will read and annotate Ch. 3 of Enrique's Journey - which will help you better understand what it's like to journey on top of a train and try to survive that trip many migrants make. Wednesday and Thursday: We're doing OPTICS and watching the documentary film "Which Way Home." You'll complete a graphic organizer while watching and some documentary film analysis questions after. Friday: 1st block - You'll be in the media center to work on your PBL with World History and Art. 2nd and 4th: We'll be doing an activity about immigrant stereotypes and watching the show "What Would You Do?" From this, you will practice writing a persuasive claim statement.
Alright, we are back! It's Friday! But it's going to feel like a Monday. I know our memories are probably lapsing after three snow days, so we will start with a review, then do a couple of OPTICs, then read Ch. 1 of Enrique's Journey (which some of you have already read, but the rest of you will enjoy). Everything for today is in the attachments below.
